Albuquerque, NM- Protest ABQ is made up of both Christian Evangelicals and devout Catholics who are committed to protesting the evil of abortion and holding our leaders accountable to end this grave atrocity. During this legislative session we have been approached by numerous Catholics who are distressed by the fact that pro-abortion Catholic democrat legislators continue to push a radical abortion agenda without being held accountable in any way by Catholic Church leadership.
One of the biggest problems New Mexico faces is religious and political leaders who either condone abortion outright or silently consent to it by refusing to take a bold public stand for protecting human life in the womb. For years Protest ABQ has publicly held political leaders both democrats and republicans accountable. Now Protest ABQ is compelled to focus on religious leadership.
It has become a public scandal when Archbishop John C. Wester publicly renounces republican Governor Susana Martinez when she tries to reinstate the death penalty but is completely silent when radically pro-abortion Catholic democrats like Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino sponsors a bill that will require religious hospitals to perform abortions and thus remove one of the few laws New Mexico has that protects hospitals and their staff members from being required to perform them.
This is not the first time Ortiz y Pino has acted in defiance to the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops without consequence. In 2015 the Senate Public Affairs Committee, chaired by Ortiz y Pino, killed all three pro-life bills sent to it from the house of representatives. Ortiz y Pino even refused to allow 911 calls documenting abortion injuries to be heard.
Pro-Abortion Catholics Attend Mass and Receive Communion
A member of Protest ABQ gave us this insightful reflection after attending mass where Ortiz y Pino received communion at St. Therese Parish in Albuquerque where he attends regularly,
"This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend a mass at St. Therese parish in the North Valley; it was an eye opening experience as to why our Democrat legislators introduce abortion expanding legislation and oppose pro-life bills. Senator Ortiz y Pino actually sat in the pew behind me.
Senator "Jerry" Ortiz y Pino is a proud Catholic for choice, which means he proudly supports the choice of a mother to kill her pre-born child. He consistently votes in opposition to his faith and Pino has now sponsored legislation in New Mexico that will force Christian hospital workers to refer for abortions and force Christian hospitals to perform abortions!
(Proud Catholic for Choice, Sen. Gerald "Jerry" Ortiz y Pino
Faithful Catholics realize that until Church leadership addresses these rouge prominent pro-abortion Catholic politicians, that New Mexico will continue it's shameful reputation as the Abortion Capital of the Southwest and the Late-Term Abortion Capital of the Country.
Statement from Rene Gracida, the retired Bishop of Corpus Christi, TX
"I placed a Texas Legislator under INTERDICT forbidding her to receive Holy Communion for repeatedly stating in interviews that the Church allows Catholics to make up their own minds about the morality of abortion. I would EXCOMMUNICATE Gerald Ortiz y Pino."
Protest ABQ is urging Catholics with a well formed conscience to reflect and pray during this season of Lent about whether or not they should withhold their annual Catholic Appeal pledge until Archbishop Wester addresses this publicly and deals with Ortiz y Pino according to church teaching. Some have already vowed to withhold their pledge this year.
The Catholics who peacefully protest abortion and corrupt leaders in New Mexico will begin visiting parishes to urge others to withhold their annual Catholic Appeal pledge as well.
Please take a moment to kindly send a written letter to Archbishop John C. Wester and ask him to address how New Mexico Catholic pro-abortion politicians are expanding abortion in the state. Ask him to stop ignoring politicians who defy their faith and promote a culture of death in New Mexico.
